Davis Cup

/deɪvəs ˈkʌp/ (say dayvuhs 'kup)

noun
1. an annual men's tennis competition between national teams.
2. the trophy for this competition.
{named after US tennis player Dwight F Davis who in 1900 donated a cup for men's international team competition}
The Davis Cup, officially known as the International Lawn Tennis Association Challenge Trophy, was established in 1900. For 70 years participation was open only to amateurs, and challenging nations contested an elimination series for the right to play the cup holder. Australia (including a NZ player) first won the cup in 1907 and retained it until 1912. The golden age of Australian tennis, however, commenced in 1950 when Australia won the cup in New York, winning a further 14 times in the next two decades. This dominance declined in the 1970s. Australia won the cup twice in the 1980s and again in 1999 and 2003.
